Travel rewards credit cards provide consumers with points or miles that can be redeemed for an array of travel-related reservations and services. Airline rewards credit cards specifically allow travelers to save money by earning award miles that can be used for future free or discounted flights, or gratuitous seating upgrades.

Travelers must be aware that award flights are not completely free. Airlines still expect passengers to pay sales tax on the award tickets. Other appropriate fees may also be charged.

Traditional Airline Credit Cards

Traditional, airline-specific credit cards are ideal for frequent flyer passengers using particular air carriers such as Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, British Airways and JetBlue Airways. For virtually every dollar cardholders spend with these cards, they earn miles that can be redeemed at a later date for seating upgrades or free tickets. JetBlue card holders actually earn “Award Dollars” on their purchases, which can be converted into TrueBlue Points that are redeemable for free flights.
